Our thanks to everyone who took time to nominate one of our outstanding teachers for Wicomico Teacher of the Year. When nominations closed last Tuesday Wicomico County Public Schools had received 803 submissions, so we know our community appreciates its teachers.

We look forward to the recognition of nominees by our schools in December, and then in January the quarterfinalists and semifinalists will be announced. One of the semifinalist teachers will be named the next Wicomico Teacher of the Year on April 9. Excited to find out which of our outstanding teachers that will be!

Students Explore Career Pathways at Universal Technical Institute
Students from Mardela recently visited the Universal Technical Institute (UTI) to gain firsthand exposure to careers in automotive, diesel, welding, robotics, and transportation technology. During the visit, students toured advanced training labs, observed live demonstrations, and explored the tools and equipment used by professionals in the field.
The experience provided students with valuable insight into the breadth of opportunities within the skilled trades. One student reflected, “It gave me more options for my future,” while another noted, “This helped me realize there is more out there than your standard trades, and this college helps you secure a job in the field after you graduate.”
Several students found the visit thought-provoking as they considered their own career paths. One remarked, “It made me think about other options,” and another shared, “It made me debate whether I wanted to stick to welding or explore auto repair or electrical work..”
Students also had the opportunity to speak with instructors about certifications, career pathways, and job placement support. Ms. Rhodes, Career Coach for Mardela expressed enthusiasm for highlighting trades programs and providing students with direct exposure to in-demand careers.
Overall, the field trip offered meaningful, real-world learning and encouraged students to explore a variety of career options, connecting classroom knowledge to potential future opportunities.
